That moment of wondering “could I be pregnant?” is one that so many women know intimately. Whether you are hoping for a positive result or simply need to know for certain, taking a pregnancy test can feel like one of the most nerve-wracking two minutes of your life. The good news is that home pregnancy tests are simple, private, and remarkably accurate when used correctly.
What Does a Pregnancy Test Actually Detect?
Before we walk you through the steps, it helps to understand what a pregnancy test is looking for. Home pregnancy tests work by detecting a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine. This hormone is produced by your body shortly after a fertilised egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. As your pregnancy progresses, hCG levels rise rapidly, making it easier for a test to detect.
When Is the Best Time to Take a Pregnancy Test?
Timing matters more than most people realise. For the most accurate result, you should take a pregnancy test:
On the first day of your missed period or after. This is when hCG levels are typically high enough to be detected by most standard home pregnancy tests.
First thing in the morning. Your first morning urine is the most concentrated of the day, meaning it contains the highest levels of hCG. Testing in the morning gives you the best chance of an accurate reading, especially in the early days.
At least 10 to 14 days after possible conception. If you are tracking ovulation or have had fertility treatment such as IUI or IVF, waiting at least two weeks before testing will give your body enough time to produce detectable levels of hCG.
Testing too early is one of the most common reasons for a false negative result. If your period is not yet late, try to wait a few more days before testing.
What You Will Need
A home pregnancy test. These are widely available at pharmacies and supermarkets. You do not need the most expensive brand. Most tests are equally accurate when used correctly.
A clean cup if your test requires collecting urine in a container rather than testing directly in the stream.
A timer or your phone to track the waiting time accurately.
Step by Step: How to Take a Pregnancy Test
Step 1: Read the Instructions First
Every pregnancy test brand is slightly different. Before you do anything else, read the instructions that come with your specific test carefully. Pay attention to how long to hold the test in urine, how long to wait for results, and what the symbols mean on your particular test.
Step 2: Collect or Prepare Your Urine Sample
Depending on the type of test you have, you will either hold the absorbent tip directly in your urine stream for the specified number of seconds, or collect your urine in a clean cup and dip the test strip into it. Both methods are equally effective when done correctly.
Step 3: Lay the Test Flat and Wait
Once you have applied your urine sample, place the test on a flat, clean surface with the result window facing up. Set your timer for the amount of time stated in the instructions. This is usually between 3 to 5 minutes. Try not to pick it up and check it repeatedly as this can affect the reading.
Step 4: Read Your Result Within the Time Window
When your timer goes off, read your result. Most tests will show one of the following:
Two lines or a plus sign typically indicates a positive result, meaning pregnancy has been detected. Even a very faint second line is still considered a positive result.
One line or a minus sign typically indicates a negative result, meaning hCG was not detected at this time.
A digital test will display the words “Pregnant” or “Not Pregnant” clearly on the screen, removing any guesswork.
Do not read the result after the time window stated in the instructions has passed. Results read too late may be inaccurate.
Step 5: Understand What Your Result Means
If your result is positive: Congratulations. You should contact your doctor or fertility clinic as soon as possible to confirm your pregnancy with a blood test and begin your antenatal care. A blood test measuring hCG levels is more sensitive and accurate than a home test and will give your doctor important information about your pregnancy.
If your result is negative but your period still has not come: Wait 2 to 3 days and test again. It is possible that you tested too early and your hCG levels were not yet high enough to detect. If your period remains absent and tests continue to show negative, speak to your doctor to investigate further.
If your result is negative and you have been trying to conceive for some time: Please do not lose heart. A negative test does not define your fertility journey. Speak with a fertility specialist who can help you understand your options and next steps.
A Few Important Things to Keep in Mind
Medications can affect results. If you are undergoing fertility treatment and have received an hCG trigger injection, testing too soon after your injection may give a false positive result. Always ask your fertility clinic when it is safe to test.
Expired tests can give inaccurate results. Always check the expiry date on your test before using it.
Some medical conditions such as certain ovarian cysts or rare tumours can cause elevated hCG levels without pregnancy. If you receive an unexpected positive result, always confirm with your doctor.
